ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team won its fourth game at Ira R. Herr Field and fifth game in a row overall thanks to
Aidan Valentine's first career goal in the second half as the Blue Jays blanked Muhlenberg, 1-0.
Kelvin Del Cid registered his fifth clean sheet of the season.
Much of the play was between the 18's as neither attack could really establish itself on the night. Muhlenberg (5-5-3) held a slim advantage in shots, 8-6, for the game. The Blue Jays had more shots on goal, however, 4-2.
Jake Groh put a shot on target in the 23rd minute, but Ben Mulford made the save. Del Cid didn't have to make a save until the waning moments of the first half, as Abraham McWilliams' effort from far out didn't trouble the senior, but still needed to come up with the ball to ensure it didn't end up in the net.
Del Cid made his second save of the night in the 61st minute, but wasn't needed again to make another. He also handled a few corners by punching the ball out of the box to alleviate any pressure from the Mules.
In the 75th minute, Elizabethtown (7-4-2) came through on yet another set piece, yet again off the delivery of
Cade Brubaker.
The Mules committed a foul just outside the box near the end line on the right side. Brubaker let his teammates set up, and Valentine made a run near post. Brubaker played a ball on the ground directly in the freshman's path and he opened up his hips toward goal and one-touched an effort that went far side and into the goal for the first of his career to put Etown ahead 1-0 with only 15 minutes remaining.
Muhlenberg pushed for an equalizer, but the Jays' defense was up to the task, not allowing a shot on goal over the final 29 minutes.
The men's soccer team will host Drew on Saturday, October 15, for Homecoming at 1 p.m.
