ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.-- The Elizabethtown field hockey team knocked off the defending Landmark Conference champions, 3-1 Saturday at Wolf Field. The Blue Jays earned their first conference win while handing Scranton their first conference loss of the season.
Elizabethtown was off to a rocky start in the first quarter as Scranton drove down the field to score 19 seconds in. Ten minutes later, the Blue Jays took over taking three penalty corners within the final five minutes of the first quarter. Etown's momentum followed into the second quarter as the Jays tied things up, 1-1 after
Catherine Amos passed the ball in a scrum to
Grace Hardy for the goal. Etown would continue with control as they didn't allow a Scranton shot in the second quarter. In the 22nd minute, senior
Chloe Smith shot on a penalty stroke but the ball went wide. In the final five minutes of the quarter, Etown took six corners and fired off shots from Smith,
Megan Meyer and Riley Stephen.
In the third quarter the Royals took their second penalty corner of the game as the Blue Jays still held possession. In the 43rd minute, Smith took another penalty stroke but it was saved by the Scranton goalkeeper, Gianna Travia. A minute later, Elizabethtown was awarded another stroke as
Sydney Aguilar knocked in the ball in the top corner to take the lead, 2-1. Following the Blue Jays 22nd penalty corner of the game after a rebounded shot, Smith tallied the final goal of the game. Scranton took over in the remaining minutes of the quarter but was only able to get off two shots which were saved and blocked.
This is the first win for Elizabethtown over Scranton since the 2018 season. The Blue Jays held the advantage in corners as they totaled a season-high 23 while Scranton recorded four. Etown also led in shots, 14-3.
Elizabethtown is back at home October, 12th at 4:30 PM as they host Moravian in Landmark Conference action.
