Blue Jays battle Greyhounds to scoreless tie

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team came out of Wednesday night's road matchup at Moravian with a point after the Blue Jays and Greyhounds battled to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes. Trinity Soto had six saves in the shutout.

Soto was needed in the opening moments of play as a shot on frame was sent her way, but the senior made her first of six in the game just over a minute into the game for Elizabethtown (5-6-1, 1-2-1 Landmark).

Soto was big again in the 27th minute, stopping Amanda Aloia's shot and then another off the ensuing corner kick, denying Hailey Scaff.

Moravian (5-4-4, 1-2-1 Landmark) outshot the Jays 8-3 in the first half. Ava Whisten and Jenna Hoffmann had shot attempts saved a minute and a half apart, the only shots on goal through 45 minutes for Etown.

The Blue Jays picked it up in the second half, however. They registered 13 second-half shots and only allowed the Greyhounds five. Though Soto had to stop a header off a corner two minutes into second-half play.

Whisten knocked one off the woodwork in the 58th minute, nailing the crossbar. Olivia Herbert also hit the crossbar late in the game.

Etown made Payce Korpics work in goal for the Greyhounds, but she was able to deny the Jays any goals. She finished with a game-high seven saves for Moravian.

Whisten had a last-chance effort saved in the 89th minute while a final attempt from the Greyhounds went wide as time ran out.

The women's soccer team will host Drew on Saturday, October 15, for Homecoming at 4:30 p.m.
