TOWSON, Md.-- The Elizabethtown women's volleyball team opened Landmark Conference play Saturday at Goucher College. The Blue Jays split the afternoon falling, 3-0 to Scranton before sweeping Moravian.
In the first match of the day, Scranton came out to a roaring start taking an early, 6-2 lead. The Blue Jays came within two after a kill from
Bryanna Miller. After two Royal attack errors, Scranton responded with a 5-0 run to lead, 18-9. Etown continued to chip away at the deficit with kills from
Georgianna Kahley and Miller but couldn't hold on as Scranton took the final two points of the set on Etown attack errors. Scranton won set one, 25-16. Set two saw the Blue Jays come out stronger, starting off with an 8-6 lead following a
Kambrie Hepler service ace. The Royals then retook the lead as they rattled off six straight points. After some back-n-forth, Elizabethtown strung together three kills and an ace at 15-18. A kill from
Katie Scaggs and
Savannah Lesley kept the Jays within two. Scranton closed out the set with a 5-1 run as they won set two, 25-19. The third set was close as the teams traded points. Scranton went on a 3-0 rally retaking the lead, 8-6. After neither team could branch a two-point lead, Scranton went on a five-point run to extend their lead, 22-15. Lesley recorded the final two kills for the Jays but ultimately fell, 25-18.
Miller led the team with seven kills and 15 digs while Hepler pitched in 22 digs of her own. Scaggs followed behind Miller with six kills while hitting .214 and adding in three blocks.
Elizabethtown saw a better outcome in their second match of the day sweeping Moravian, 3-0 with a .342 team hitting percentage. The Blue Jays started off hot in the first set with a 7-2 lead capped by a service ace from
Gracie Britten. After trading points, Etown went on a 5-0 run with Lesley taking the charge as she pitched in two kills. Moravian added a kill before Etown added another three points with the help from Britten, Kahley, and
Lucy Stern. Miller ended the set with a service ace for a 25-10 win. Set two was no different for the Blue Jays as they jumped to a 6-3 lead over the Greyhounds. The Jays kept rolling to a 9-4 after Scaggs smacked down a kill sandwiched between two Miller kills. Kills from Hepler, Miller and Lesley gave the Blue Jays an eight-point lead. Moravian then closed the gap as they racked up six consecutive points to come within two. Etown got the final say and recorded the final three points, taking set two 25-20. The third set was closer as Scaggs put down a kill with a 9-8 lead. Elizabethtown pulled away with a 18-13 lead after kills from Scaggs and Miller. The Greyhounds mixed in some final points in the set but Etown got the final say with a kill from Miller to win, 25-17.
Miller recorded her fourth double-double of the season as she racked up 17 kills (,378) and 17 digs. Kahley, Lesley, Scaggs and Britten each totaled eight kills a piece. Hepler tallied 21 digs while Kahley added 12.
Elizabethtown continues with Landmark action as they host Goucher, Wednesday October 5th at 7 PM.
