ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's basketball team held the defending Landmark Conference champions to 28 points in the first half and took a lead into halftime, but the Rangers dialed up the deep ball in the second half and pulled away from the Blue Jays in an 88-70 win at Thompson Gymnasium.
Ryan Fitzpatrick led four Etown players in double figures with 15 points.
Drew was up by four early in the game until
Niko Georgelis drained a three for the Jays with 4:09 gone in the first half. A little over a minute later,
Jared Archer knocked down his jumper to keep Elizabethtown within two.Â
Jalin Robinson made another trey for the Blue Jays to tie things up at 11-11 with 11:36 remaining in the half. A possession later,
Rance Russo put Elizabethtown in the lead for the first time in the game. David Gervase knocked down the Rangers only three of the half to put Drew back up by a point before EC scored six straight from
Tyreke Herbert (2) and Russo (4).
The game went back and forth with under five minutes left in the half as the teams traded the lead back and forth. Fitzpatrick had five straight for Etown, including a three of his own. He had the final 10 points of the half for the Blue Jays as they led 29-28 at the break.
Elizabethtown went inside to
Dylan Rowe to start the second half. His layups were good on consecutive possessions as the Jays led by three, 33-30. The teams then went on to trade the lead another three times over a minute and a half, though Drew took control of the lead.
Down six, Rowe's layup and Russo's three brought Etown back within a point with 14:42 to go. Still close, it was Malachi Walker's three with 12:57 remaining that started a massive three-point barrage from the Rangers to close out the game. His three made it a six-point affair and by the time Drew Gallagher knocked down threes on back-to-back possessions, the lead had blossomed to 13 at 69-56 with 8:38 left.
Drew hit 9 of 15 attempts from beyond the arc in the second half while Elizabethtown was just 4 for 11 from deep. Once the Rangers got the lead into double digits, they did not let the Blue Jays back into it as they went on to win 88-70. Howard McBurnie Jr. led five in double figures for Drew with 17 points.
Fitzpatrick's 15 came on an efficient 5 for 9 from the floor, including a pair of treys. Russo added 13, Rowe had 12 and 7 rebounds, while Archer had 11 off the bench with three threes.
The men's basketball team travels to Goucher on Wednesday, February 2, at 7 p.m.
