ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team could not complete the comeback bid, falling to Gettysburg 2-1 Saturday morning at Elizabethtown Area High School.
With the loss, the Blue Jays drop to 0-2 on the season while the Bullets start the year 1-0.
Senior Erika Antunes had the lone tally for Etown, her first of the season. Junior Gabi Brown and freshman Ava Whisten both recorded assists on the goal.
Seniors Erika Muskus and Emma Bedell each netted goals for Gettysburg.
After a scoreless first half, the Bullets wasted little time getting on the board in the second half. In the 47th minute, Muskus made space on the right side and rifled home a shot to the opposite post for the one goal advantage.
Just under 10 minutes later, Bedell got free on the left side of the Blue Jays' penalty box and snuck a shot under a sprawling junior Trinity Soto for the Bullets' second of the game.
Etown rallied and in the 65th minute as Brown laced a low service to the front post from the right side. Whisten received and flicked the cross on to Antunes who buried it in the back of the net, cutting Gettysburg's advantage to one.
The Blue Jays' nearly found the tying goal in the 82nd minute as Etown drew a penalty just outside the Bullets' 18-yard box. Graduate student Janelle Barna stepped up and hit a dipping shot but could not quite find the frame. Gettysburg then closed out the final eight minutes to preserve the 2-1 win.
Soto (0-1) made two saves in the loss. Senior Maddie Cunningham (0-1) made four saves in the win for the Bullets
Elizabethtown heads back out on the road to Lancaster, Pa. to take on F&M. Opening kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
