ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team scored two goals in the second half to for a season opening win over TCNJ, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Elizabethtown Area High School.
Junior Mehluko Letsoalo netted the game winner for the Blue Jays, while classmate Jeffery Bennett netted his first career goal. Senior Massimo Mazzella, junior Tyler Wagner, and Pedro Guizardi each tallied assists.
After a scoreless first half, Etown found the first goal of the game. In the 72nd minutes, Wagner found Winchilla who split the defense with a pass to find Bennett on the left side of the Lions' penalty box. Bennett took a touch and laced home the score, moving the Blue Jays ahead 1-0.
Just over three minutes later TCNJ responded as junior Justin Dominique sent a cross in from the right side. Senior Ryan Santos touched in on to the opposite post, tying the score with just over 15 minutes remaining.
The deadlock did not last long as 23 seconds later Guizardi and Mazzella combined to Letsoalo in the Lions' 18-yard box. Letsoalo did the rest, knocking a shot past the TCNJ goalie, putting the Blue Jays back on top.
Etown's defense held strong the rest of the, lifting the Blue Jays to the season-opening win, 2-1.
Sophomore Kelvin Delcid (1-0) made three saves in his season debut. Sophomore Julian Franco (0-1) made three saves as well in a losing effort.
No rest for Elizabethtown as they host Bridgewater tomorrow, September 5, for day two of the Brothers Pizza Soccer Classic. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Elizabethtown Area High School.
