Women's soccer shows off scoring depth in 4-0 win at Penn State Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- After tonight's 4-0 win at Penn State Harrisburg, the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team is just one player shy of having at least 10 different goal scorers. Four different players recorded goals Wednesday evening in the shutout win against the Lions, including Emily Rathell's first career goal.

Janelle Barna, who had a hand in all four goals for Elizabethtown (4-4-1), got the Blue Jays on the board in the 20th minute with her second of the season. After a long ball went too far for the Lions, Lyndee Anders controlled the ball and swung it over to Marissa Lapinsky on their own half of the field. Lapinsky took the space in front of her and dribbled her way into the attacking third. She played a ball up to Aleaha Bigelow, with her back to goal and a defender quickly approaching. The sophomore took a touch back toward Lapinsky, got turned, and played a ball into the path of a cutting Barna. She took a touch around the last line of defense, and from the top of the box, smashed a left footer that was too hot to handle.

Exactly eight minutes later, Sydney Reich recorded her second of the season to double the advantage for the Jays. Barna won a 50/50 ball off Penn State Harrisburg's (3-3-4) goal kick and slipped a ball immediately out wide to Ava Whisten. Her cross went directly across the mouth of the goal and as Barna and Reich were both cutting toward the net, Reich touched it into the left side of the goal to make it 2-0 in the 28th minute.

Elizabethtown maintained its 2-0 lead at halftime.

It was more of the same from the Blue Jays in the second half, with some pretty combination play in the midfield to set up the third goal. The ball got played back to Rathell from the sideline, and she brought the ball into a more central position on the field in her attacking third. The freshman touched a pass ahead to Barna, who then squared the ball into Bailey Groff's path toward goal. The mid took a touch and split a pair of defenders with a perfectly placed pass as Whisten ran onto it and, like her goal against Penn State Berks on Sept. 18, her low drive found the inside of the far netting. It was Whisten's team-leading third goal of the season and goal No. 3 for the Jays in the 75th minute.

Rathell concluded Etown's night by being in the right place at the right time. After the Lions played in a free kick from the right side of the box, the Blue Jays cleared the ball away and started the counter attack. Barna unleashed Lapinsky into plenty of open space and the senior took it. Striding toward the PSH goal, Lapinsky played Bigelow into the box. The forward didn't waste the chance, sending a shot goal bound, but saved by Shifflett. She was unable to handle the shot, however, and the rebound bounced to her right as Rathell had followed the play and was there for the rebound opportunity. With no one left to stop the ball, the Shrewsbury, Pa. native pounded the ball into the goal, the first of her career. Rathell became the ninth different player to have scored this season for Etown.

Trinity Soto needed only two saves and Adrienne McGallicher finished out the final nine minutes for the combined shutout.

The Blue Jays will host Catholic on Saturday, October 2, at 1 p.m. at Ira R. Herr Field.
