ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- After a scoreless first half, the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half and did not allow one as they shut out Catholic at Ira R. Herr Field on Saturday, 3-0.
Janelle Barna recorded a brace and
Gabi Brown provided the other goals as the Blue Jays moved to 2-0 in the Landmark Conference.
Elizabethtown (5-4-1, 2-0 Landmark) outshot the Cardinals in the first half, though they were not able to find a way to beat starter Maeve Graham in goal. The same was true for Catholic (4-5-1, 0-2 Landmark), who couldn't beat
Trinity Soto at the other end.
The Blue Jays' best chance of the half came early, but
Aleaha Bigelow's bid for the game's opening goal was kept out by the defense.
Barna got things rolling for Elizabethtown in the 57th minute. An Etown long ball into the box was cleared back out by a Catholic defender, but that ball went straight to
Erika Antunes. The senior touched the ball back toward the Cardinals' box, where it fell onto the foot of Bigelow. Her controlled touch went back to Barna, and with a defender right on her, she took two dribbles past and unleashed a low drive that swerved away from the diving goalie's hands and into the back of the net. It was Barna's first of the game and third of the season, and the second consecutive game in which she's scored.
11 minutes later, the Blue Jays made it 2-0.
Emily Rathell and
Maddie McWhinney played a game of keep away on the right side of the box. Two defenders converged on Rathell, who split them with a pass to send McWhinney toward the end line. Her cross went right out in front of goal where
Mary Deitch met the ball near the penalty spot and her one-time effort clanked off the left post and back into the middle. A scramble for the ball between a number of players with the goalkeeper down eventually popped out to an oncoming Brown, who slammed it top shelf for her second of the season.
Though 2-0 seemed like enough to get the three points for Elizabethtown, Barna's second of the day was added insurance.
Marissa Vandernick was able to get by her defender on the right side of the box. Similarly to McWhinney's ball into the middle, Vandernick's cross went untouched across and met the boot of Barna, who easily one-touched the ball into the left side of the goal to make it 3-0 in the 77th minute. It was Vandernick's first career collegiate assist and point.
Soto went relatively unchallenged for the Blue Jays in goal. She finished the day with four saves for her third solo shutout of the season.
The Blue Jays will have a week off before heading to play Juniata on the road next Saturday, October 9, at 1 p.m.
