HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Both teams scored early in the game, but that was all the scoring there would be between the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team and Juniata on Saturday.
Aleaha Bigelow recorded the Jays' goal in the 14th minute and the Eagles responded two minutes later. Double overtime could not decide a winner as Etown and Juniata finished in a 1-1 tie at Gibbel Stadium.
Marissa Vandernick intercepted a crossfield ball by the Eagles and began the attack for the Blue Jays.
Janelle Barna linked with
Marissa Lapinsky on the right side and Lapinsky played Whisten down toward the endline. The Juniata defender took position and looked to ride the ball out for a goal kick, but Whisten pressured and was able to keep it in play. The freshman dribbled toward the box as Bigelow peeled away from the backline and backed herself out into view of Whisten. The forward fed the ball perfectly to Bigelow, who took one swing and sent the ball far post, out of the reach of the goalkeeper to make it 1-0 for Elizabethtown (5-4-2, 2-0-1 Landmark) in the 14th minute. It was Bigelow's second of the season.
Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, the lead did not last long as Juniata (5-3-4, 0-1-2 Landmark) pulled level in the 16th minute on Emma Moreland's goal.
From there, the second half saw 13 combined shots, but zero goals through 90 minutes, which meant at least one overtime period. After 10 minutes of one overtime, neither side could produce a winner, forcing a second. Though Etown outshot Juniata 3-1 in the overtime periods, 20 minutes of extra time couldn't decide a winner as the teams finished in a 1-1 tie.
Trinity Soto made one save in the game. Cati Besch had six for the Eagles.
The women's soccer team will host Moravian on Wednesday, October 13, at 7 p.m.
