ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College women's volleyball team stretched its winning streak to four matches, topping both Penn State Berks and York, 3-1, in non-conference action.
With the pair of wins, the Blue Jays improve to 8-4 on the season.
Junior
Bryanna Miller finished with double-doubles in both matches, recording 13 kills and 13 digs against the Nittany Lions and 16 kills and 12 digs against the Spartans. Sophomore
Georgianna Kahley registered a career-high 30 digs against York while Hanks finished the day with a total of 68 assists. Senior
Shelly Yohe recorded her second career double-double against Penn State Berks, finishing with 14 kills and 15 digs.
After dispatching with the Nittany Lions, 3-1, in the first match of the day, the final match against the Spartans proved to be the highlight of the tri-match.
Etown wasted little time putting its stamp on the first set, rattling off the first eight points of the opening stanza capped off by an ace from Kahley.
York closed within five (15-10), but Hanks found Kahley for a kill to push the Blue Jays advantage back to six (16-10).
The Spartans refused to go away quietly, tying the match at 22 and then again at 23, but Etown answered the challenge as Yohe and Miller slammed home kills to take the opening set 25-23.
Etown once again ran out to an early lead in the second set, taking a 12-6 lead after an ace by senior
Rileigh Hudock and an attack error by York.
The two teams continued to trade punches as the Spartans closed within three at 19-16. However, that is as close as the Blue Jays would allow the visitors to get, finishing the second set on a 6-1 run capped off yet again by a kill from Miller for the 25-17 win and the 2-0 lead.
After York took the third set, 25-20, both teams were set for a battle in the fourth. The opening portion of the frame saw the score tied 13 times on their way to a deadlock at 19. From this point, the Blue Jays took their largest lead of the final set, rattling off four straight points to take a 23-19 lead. Miller and freshman.
Lily Johnson both had kills over this stretch.
The Spartans snatched back momentum and crawled back into the match with a 5-1 run to tie the score again at 24.
Etown, however, made that the final point of the day for York, as Miller hammered home back-to-back kills to take the set, 26-24, and the match 3-1.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Thursday, September 30 when they travel to Reading, Pa. for a match against Alvernia. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
