Men's Soccer Opens Conference Play with Win Over Goucher

BALTIMORE, Md. - Four different players scored as the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team opened Landmark Conference play with a 4-2 win over Goucher Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 5-1-1 on the season, while the Gophers fall to 3-5-1.

Senior Dylan Hairfield, junior Tyler Wagner, and Pedro Guizardi all scored the first goal of their careers. Junior Ryan Hepler added a tally as well to raise his team-leading total to four. Senior Massimo Mazzella registered an assists for his second of the year while junior Mehluko Letsoalo and freshman Luke Kelly each added a helper of their own.

Xavier Dever and Jeremiah Odubade both scored for Goucher.

Hepler wasted little time finding his fourth goal of the season, giving the Blue Jays the early 1-0 advantage in the 11th minute.

After Goucher tied the score at one, Hairfield took the lead right back in the 35th minute. Kelly received a face and immediately found space down the right side. He then hit a low curling cross to just outside the six yard box where Hairfield easily one-timed it into the back of the net, giving Etown the one goal advantage heading into halftime.

The Blue Jays added to its total in the 61st minute as Guizardi planted himself in front of the Gophers' goalkeeper on a corner kick. Letsoalo curled in a service to the front post where Guizardi headed it to the back post for Etown's third of the game.

Less than 10 minutes later, Wagner found an insurance foal for the Blue Jays. The junior found the ball at his feet on the right side of the Goucher penalty box and took it from there, beating two defenders and the goalie off the dribble before slotting the ball into the back of the net, giving Etown a 4-1 lead.

The Gophers would manage to get one back, but that is as close as they would get as the Blue Jays open Landmark Conference play with a 4-2 win. This is the second consecutive season that Elizabethtown has opened League play with a win after topping Susquehanna 3-1 in 2019's opener.

Junior Kelvin Del Cid (3-1-1) earned his third win of the season, making five saves on seven shots on goal. Jeff Castro (3-5-1) took the loss for Goucher, making four saves on eight shots on goal.

Elizabethtown returns home for its first game of the 2021 on Ira R. Herr Field when they take on local rival Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, September 29. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
