Blue Jays Battle #4 Falcons to Scoreless Draw

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team repelled a relentless Messiah attack all night, battling to a 0-0 draw in the annual Marshmallow Bowl Wednesday night.

With the tie, the Blue Jays move to 4-1-1 on the season while the Falcons, ranked fourth in Division III in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, remains unbeaten at 4-0-2.

This is only the third tie in the rivalry, dating back to 1980. The Marshmallow Bowl is one of the more unique traditions in college athletics. For nearly three decades, fans from both sides have thrown thousands of marshmallows during the annual game.

After a scoreless opening frame, Messiah poured it on in the second half, outshooting Etown 8-1. The Blue Jays still held strong only allowing one of the eight shots to be on goal.

In overtime, the Falcons managed six shots but were unable to cash in as the Elizabethtown defense earned its third consecutive clean sheet and fourth overall, tying Messiah 0-0.

Junior Kelvin Del Cid (2-0-1) made three saves for the Blue Jays. Delcid has only allowed two goals on the year and is second in the Landmark Conference with a 0.47 goals-against average.

Senior Jared Pavlovich (4-0-2) was not forced to make any saves for the Falcons in the draw.

Elizabethtown opens Landmark Conference play on Saturday, September 25 when they travel to Baltimore, Md. to take on Goucher. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
