Late goal costs field hockey at Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- Riley Stephan scored her first career goal for the Elizabethtown College field hockey team on Saturday at Stockton. The Ospreys broke a 1-1 tie midway through the fourth quarter and held on to beat the Blue Jays, 2-1.

Maeve Keeney had the only shot on goal of the first quarter, but her shot was saved as Elizabethtown (2-4) and Stockton went into the second quarter at 0-0.

Grace Hussey and Sydney Aguilar had opportunities early in the second, but Alley Harris made back-to-back saves. Aguilar's chance came off an Etown corner.

Stockton, despite being outshot by the Blue Jays in the first half, took a 1-0 lead with 5:10 to go in the second and led by a goal at the half.

The Ospreys came out looking for that second goal right away. Goalie Angelina Giglio-Tos made seven third-quarter saves and finished the game with 12, and did not allow a goal in the third period despite the barrage from Stockton.

2:54 into the fourth quarter, Chloe Smith was fouled as she dribbled her way over midfield and into the offensive end. On the restart, Smith laced a ball toward the circle that took a deflection off a stick and in on goal. Harris had trouble handling the bouncing ball, and Stephan was to stick the loose ball between the goalie's legs into an open net to make it 1-1 and record her first career goal.

With seven minutes left in regulation, Stockton retook the lead and held off the Blue Jays the rest of the way.

The field hockey team will play at Eastern on Wednesday, September 22, at 4 p.m.
