ST. DAVID'S, Pa. -- Grace Hardy scored twice and
Salena Paronish recorded her first career goal for the Elizabethtown College field hockey team in Wednesday's 4-2 win at Eastern.
Grace Hussey clinched the game for Etown with her goal late in the fourth quarter as the Blue Jays snapped a two-game losing skid.
Eastern's (1-6) Jenna Lapp made it 1-0 a little over 10 minutes into the first quarter. Hardy responded for the Jays two minutes later after a penalty stroke was called for Elizabethtown (3-4). Hardy stepped up and slung a shot to the left side of the cage, beating the goalie to tie the game at 1-1. It was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Though neither side scored in the second quarter, the Eagles spent much of the time in Etown's defensive end.
Angelina Giglio-Tos made four second-quarter saves to keep it 1-1 going into the half.
She also made three early saves in the third quarter to prevent Eastern from retaking the lead. This allowed the Blue Jays to grab the lead just over five minutes into the quarter as Paronish stuck with the play and battled Lily White along the goal line for the ball. Paronish was able to muscle it free and stick it home to give Etown a 2-1 lead. This came seconds after
Emily Garvin's shot was saved by Abby Agapito. The rebound went to
Sydney Aguilar in the middle and her shot on goal was stopped by White on the line. Paronish jumped into the fray and wound up with the go-ahead goal.
The lead didn't last long, much like Eastern's in the first quarter. Morgan Ruhl redirected Hailey Ferry's shot from the top left of the circle that squeaked inside the left post to tie the game at 2-2.
Hardy got her second of the game with less than eight minutes to go in regulation.
Chloe Smith pushed the ball back into the circle. Hardy was stationed in front of the goalie, touched the ball around her, and from the angle, connected with the back of the cage for her second of the day and fifth of the season to put Elizabethtown back in front, 3-2.
As the defense did not allow a shot over the final 14:06 of the fourth quarter, Hussey made sure it was the Jays' game to win with her late goal. She inserted the corner out to Smith out top. Smith directed the ball to her left onto
Sierra Zittle's stick. Zittle swiped the ball toward the goal and on its way there, Hussey deflected the ball into the cage for her fourth of the season and Etown's fourth of the game with just 34 seconds to go.
Giglio-Tos made eight saves total in the game to get the win. Elizabethtown will host Goucher on Saturday, September 25, at 1 p.m. as they open up Landmark Conference play at Wolf Field.
