Mahoney named USILA All-American for second time

LOUISVILLE, Kent. -- Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse graduate student Tom Mahoney became the fourth player in program history to earn multiple All-America honors from the USILA. Mahoney was named an All-America Honorable Mention on Friday by the organization, the second time in his career he has earned the distinction.

Mahoney, who returned for a fifth year, added to his already impressive resume. The Hillsborough, N.J. native concludes his excellent career as the program's all-time winningest goalie with 37 career victories. He also ranks first all-time in career saves with 682 and saves per game, 10.83 per contest. He is just one of three goalies in program history to make 10 or more saves per game over his career.

As a freshman, Mahoney anchored a Blue Jays' squad that finally got the monkey off its back by winning its first-ever Landmark Conference Championship at Wolf Field over Catholic, 12-7. Mahoney made eight saves in goal that day, which also sent Elizabethtown to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

While the Jays came up short in 2017 in the national tournament, they were right back in it in 2018, in large part to the play of Mahoney. Etown won its second consecutive Landmark crown and earned another trip to NCAAs. This time, facing John Carroll at Gettysburg, the Blue Jays came out on top, 9-6, behind 11 saves from Mahoney to earn Elizabethtown's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory.

Mahoney helped Etown to a third, in 2019, before COVID-19 cancelled the 2020 season before the Jays could go for a fourth. He got another chance in 2021 and was stout in goal once more, leading Elizabethtown to the second seed in the Landmark. Mahoney posted four games of allowing five or fewer goals, including a season-low one in a 13-1 win over Susquehanna on April 21.

Twice the graduate student was needed for a season-high 22 saves, both games involving Scranton, the second of which came in the Landmark Conference semifinal that sent that Jays back to the championship as they sought their fourth straight title.

Along with his career records, Mahoney also set a few season records for the program. His 130 saves are the tenth-most in a single season. His 14.44 saves per game and .625 save percentage were both school records. He's only the third goalie all-time to record a save percentage of .600 or better over a season. His 2021 save percentage was also the best in any one season of his career.

Mahoney joins teammates Joe Clark (2016, 2017), Mike Specht (2016, 2017), and Jeremy Klipple (2018, 2019) as the only multi-time USILA All-Americans in school history. Mahoney was also a USILA All-America selection in 2019.
