Rodriguez sends Blue Jays into Landmark semifinals

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Senior Jay Rodriguez outscored Drew on his own in the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team's 17-5 Landmark First Round win on Wolf Field Saturday afternoon. Rodriguez had a career high six goals and seven points for the Blue Jays, who advance to the Landmark semifinal round.

Finn Kristan scored twice in the first two minutes of the game and Rodriguez made it 3-0 with his first of six in the game, but the Rangers struck back to get within one, 3-2, with 6:32 to go in the first. Rodriguez and Reese Levinson (2) combined for the final three goals of the quarter as Elizabethtown showed signs of pulling away to close out the opening period.

Etown led as much as 9-2 in the second thanks to three unanswered to begin the quarter. Tristan Coleman, Brent Wehland, and Rodriguez each scored to build up the seven-goal lead. Drew scored three of the final four and trailed by five at half, 10-5.

The Blue Jays clamped down on defense in the second half, not allowing a goal to Drew over the final 30 minutes. Rodriguez had both Etown goals in the third on separate assists from Coleman and Kristan.

Elizabethtown took a 12-5 lead into the fourth, where five different Jays recorded goals to close out the Rangers. Rodriguez, Casey Lamey, Coleman, Tom Gress, and Graham Lindsay netted those goals as they slammed the door shut on the First Round matchup in the rain.

Drew had trouble establishing any kind of rhythm, especially in the second half, with 12 turnovers over the final two quarters. The Blue Jays also won the face-off battle, 18-7, and were perfect on clears in the second half.

Coleman added five assists in the game to go with his pair of goals. Levinson had a hat trick and Kristan also scored twice and assisted twice. Ben Zaitz stopped 15 shots in the game.

Elizabethtown plays at Catholic on Wednesday, April 29, at 4 p.m.
