Blue Jays Can't Overcome Early Deficit, Fall to Cardinals in Regular Season Finale

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team could not overcome and early 5-0 deficit, falling to Catholic 16-10 Wednesday evening in Landmark Conference action.

With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 5-2 on the season and clinch the two seed in next week's Landmark Conference Tournament. Cardinals remains undefeated on the season at 6-0.

Etown was led by graduate student Mike Scrafano who tallied four points on a goal and three assists. Junior Owen Yake finished with a goal and an assist and classmate Brandon Smith registered a career-high two points on a goal and an assist.

Senior Kevin Crowley paced Catholic with a game-high six goals and two assists.

After falling behind 5-0 in the first period, the Blue Jays began to chip away at the Cardinals' advantage as Scrafano slotted home Etown's first goal of the game with 13:21 left in the second quarter.

The Cardinals responded with two more goals, pushing their lead to 7-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.

The Blue Jays rallied to finish the second quarter going on a 3-0 run bringing the score to 7-4 heading into the break. Yake and juniors Alex Kilgour and Micah Ballew each scored over this stretch.

Etown kept the momentum at the start of the third quarter and outscored Catholic 5-3 in the period, closing the gap to one (10-9) heading into the fourth quarter.

Senior Ned Cassily tied the game in the opening seconds of the final period, firing home a long-stick goal with 14:44 showing on the clock and knotting the game at 10.

Catholic however took back control of the game scoring the final six goals of the game to top the Blue Jays 16-10.

Graduate student Tom Mahoney (5-2) made a game-high 18 saves on 50 shots faced.

Sopomore Nic Pezone (6-0) finished with 13 saves on 45 shots faced.
