BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team dug itself out of a 7-2 hole midway through the first half of Saturday night's Landmark Conference quarterfinal matchup at Moravian. Down one a halftime and tied in the second half, the Blue Jays fought for 60 minutes, but came up short in a 15-12 loss.
Kate Ziegler posted a season-high five goals while
Lexie Sharp added four for Etown.
Elizabethtown (1-8) took the lead on Sharp's game-opening goal nearly four minutes into the contest, which was the third between the two schools this season. Moravian (6-4) responded with three consecutive goals to tie the game and then go in front, 3-1.
Sharp fed Ziegler for her first of five on the night. The Greyhounds went on another spurt, this time with four unanswered goals to jump ahead by five, 7-2, with 15:36 left in the first half.
The Jays settled down on defense and would outscore Moravian 5-1 the remainder of the half, including a man up goal with just 27 seconds to go to cut the deficit to only one, 8-7. Sharp scored three times in the final 8:29 of the first half with Ziegler adding her second of the opening half.
Jesse Sartor also recorded a goal for Etown.
Ziegler's hat trick was complete 1:10 into the second half as she scored to tie the game at 8-8. The Greyhounds then went back ahead with a pair of goals, but Ziegler was up to the task of answering for Elizabethtown as the senior tallied twice over a span of 3:08 to knot up the contest once again.
Twice
Sam Deiaco scored to get the Blue Jays back within a goal, but Moravian was able to get those goals back to regain their two-goal leads. Etown was as close as 13-12 with 5:25 remaining in regulation after Deiaco scored a man down for her second of the game.
The Greyhounds were able to hold off Elizabethtown in the final minutes and Eliza Fantazzi capped off the game with a goal with just nine seconds left that pushed the final margin to three, 15-12.
Jennifer Beihoff tied a career-high with 15 saves in goal. It was the second consecutive game with as many saves for the Garden City, N.Y. native.
