MADISON, N.J. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team battled with Drew to a pair of one-run, extra inning games Saturday at Ranger Field. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, both of those games went to the Rangers, each in eight innings.
Amelia Lark drove in a run in game one, while four different players, including
Ashley Mistichelli, had RBIs in game two for the Blue Jays.
GAME 1: Drew 2, Elizabethtown 1 (F/8)
Elizabethtown (0-6, 0-6 Landmark) was held to a single hit in the first game, but were able to manufacture a run off it.
Brinley Schmidt reached on an error to start the game. She moved up to second on a ground out to third and then scored on Lark's RBI base hit.
Paige Phillips held Drew (2-4, 2-4 Landmark) to a single run for seven innings, but the offense was unable to produce that second run.
The Rangers were able to escape game one with a walkoff single.
GAME 2: Drew 5, Elizabethtown 4 (F/8)
Down 3-0 in the fourth inning of game two, Mistichelli got the rally started for the Blue Jays. After Phillips led off the frame with a base hit, the junior tripled to right field to bring Phillips home. Fasolo followed with a sac fly RBI to score Mistichelli from third and get Etown within a run at 3-2.
The Rangers held the lead into the seventh and were three outs from sweeping Elizabethtown.
Courtney Fitzsimons started the seventh with a single to center field and moved into scoring position on a ground out the next at-bat. A passed ball then allowed the senior to advance to third. Schmidt brought her in with a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game at 3-3.
Tori Caputo got out of a jam with runners at second and third in the bottom of the seventh, inducing a grounder to third for the final out of the inning.
Meghan Giusti reached on an error that allowed Mistichelli to score in the eighth to give Etown a 4-3 lead. The Rangers rallied in the bottom half of the eighth with two runs to get the win and complete the Saturday sweep of the Jays.
