SCRANTON, Pa. -- After suffering a pair of losses at the hands of Scranton a day ago, the Elizabethtown College softball team turned around and traveled to Magis Field on Sunday for another doubleheader with the Royals. The Blue Jays fell twice to Scranton, 10-2 and 11-0.
Paige Phillips had a pair of hits in each game for Etown.
Game 1: Scranton 10, Elizabethtown 2 (F/6)
Elizabethtown (0-4, 0-4 Landmark) found themselves down 2-0 after two innings, but tied it up in the top half of the fourth. Phillips helped her own cause with a leadoff double to left, then advanced to third a batter later on a ground out to first.
Ashley Mistichelli sent a double to left center to score Phillips and get the Blue Jays on the board.
Then, with Mistichelli on third and two outs in the inning,
Courtney Fitzsimons knocked in the junior with an RBI base hit to left to tie the game at 2-2.
Scranton (4-0, 4-0 Landmark) responded with a three-run bottom half of the fourth to retake the lead, 5-2. The Royals added three runs in the fifth and posted two more in the sixth to end the game with a 10-2 final.
Grace Hussey and
Amelia Lark also had hits in the game for Elizabethtown.
Game 2: Scranton 11, Elizabethtown 0 (F/5)
A big third inning helped the Royals take a commanding lead in the second game of two on the day. Scranton led 2-0 after one, but a nine-run bottom of the third opened things up.
Etown had a runner in scoring position with one out in the second, but couldn't generate a run as pitcher Meaghan Dowdell worked out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts to leave the Jays empty handed. In fact, Elizabethtown had a runner reach second in the following two innings, but were unable to get each runner across the plate.
With Scranton in command of the game, Dowdell finished out the game, holding the Blue Jays scoreless as the game ended after five innings.
Phillips went 2-for-2 in the game while
Brinley Schmidt and Mistichelli each added a hit apiece.
Elizabethtown will remain on the road as they travel to play at Drew for a Landmark doubleheader next Saturday, March 27. Game one will start at 1 p.m.
