ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Grace Hardy scored early and Hardy scored late as the Elizabethtown College field hockey team went on to shutout Juniata on Saturday, 2-0.
Angelina Giglio-Tos made three saves in goal to earn her third shutout of the season as Etown moved to 2-1 in the Landmark Conference.
The Blue Jays didn't allow a single shot in the first quarter to Juniata (2-11, 1-2 Landmark).
Chloe Smith's early attempt at goal was stopped by Nicole Piccioni, though the next shot had a better result.
Grace Hussey got by her defender along the end line and her cross in front of the goal was met by Hardy for her 11th of the season that gave Elizabethtown (6-7, 2-1 Landmark) a 1-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Eagles flipped the script on the Jays in the second, amassing three shots while Etown only had one, late in the quarter. Hanne Scheel's shot off a penalty corner insert needed saved by Giglio-Tos, which the freshman did just that. A minute later, she stopped Sydney Witter's chance from the middle of the circle. Giglio-Tos made her third save of the quarter with eight seconds before half, stopping Brooke Franke to keep Elizabethtown in front 1-0 at halftime.
The Blue Jays tried to crack through in the third, but were denied multiple times. Etown's pressure turned into five shots on goal and four penalty corners. Brittney McMullen, who played the second and third quarters for Juniata, saved all five attempts on goal. Franke had a chance late in the third, but Smith was there to intervene and keep it out of the goal and preserve the Jays' lead.
Elizabethtown kept a corner play alive minutes into the fourth quarter and it paid off with Hardy's second of the game. Aguilar was able to maintain control of the ball and work her way back toward goal and centered a pass, that much like her first goal, Hardy met in front of goal and stuffed it home. Hardy's 12th of the year gave the Blue Jays some breathing room at 2-0 with over 11 minutes to go in the game.
Juniata had a pair of penalty corners with under 10 minutes remaining, but couldn't generate a shot as the Jays did not allow a shot for the second quarter of the game.
The field hockey team will play at Moravian on Wednesday, October 13, at 7 p.m.
