Swarthmore thwarts Etown's comeback attempt with late goal

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey trailed 2-0 after the first quarter, but were able to tie the game in the second half only to see Swarthmore spoil the comeback attempt with a late goal to beat the Blue Jays 3-2 at Wolf Field on Wednesday. Salena Paronish and Anna Mostoller scored for Elizabethtown in the close loss.

Swarthmore (8-2) got an early lead at Katherine Kohn scored a little over two minutes into the first quarter to give the Garnet a quick 1-0 lead. That advantage doubled in the latter half of the quarter when Samantha Meacock made it 2-0 with 5:48 left in the first.

Four saves from Angelina Giglio-Tos and a defensive save by Janelle Nolt kept Swarthmore off the scoreboard in the second quarter. That allowed Paronish to cut the deficit in half with her third of the season nearly six minutes in.

Chloe Smith took a miscontrolled touch off a Swarthmore stick back in toward the circle after it had been played out. Smith dribbled around and by three defenders as she made her way into the circle. She fired off a shot that got played down in front of the goalie Victoria Kimmel, and after a brief scramble among several players, Paronish jumped on the loose ball and beat Kimmel to make it 2-1.

Madeline Kachel started the second half for the Blue Jays and it didn't take long for her to get to work. She made five saves in the third quarter, but more importantly, did not allow a goal. With under two minutes to go in the third, Mostoller received a misfire clearance by the defense that went right to the midfielder. She maneuvered her way into the circle, drew her stick back, and fired a shot that beat Kimmel to the near post from the right wing for the goal that tied the game at 2-2 heading into the fourth.

The Garnet were persistent in their pressure on the attack as they did not allow Elizabethtown a single shot in the fourth quarter and just the one, Mostoller's goal, in the second half of play. Etown was 1:50 away from forcing overtime, but Kohn came through for Swarthmore with her second of the day late in the game. That goal turned out to be the game-winner as the Garnet closed it out for the 3-2 win.

Kachel had seven saves in 30 minutes while Giglio-Tos made six saves in her 30 minutes. Kimmel finished with three for Swarthmore.

Elizabethtown finishes out this three-game home stand with a Landmark Conference matchup with Juniata on Saturday, October 9, at 1 p.m. on Wolf Field.
