Blue Jays hang tough with #8 McDaniel in 3-1 loss

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team knew it was up against a tough test Tuesday night at Ira R. Herr Field in nationally-ranked No. 8 McDaniel. Ava Whisten scored late in the second half to break up the shut out as the Green Terror beat the Blue Jays 3-1 in non-conference action.

Hannah Schepers scored in the 11th minute to give McDaniel (14-1) a 1-0 lead early on, but the Blue Jays' defense held up the remainder of the half, not allowing another goal. Trinity Soto only needed to make two saves over the final 35 minutes of the first half.

Soto added to her save total with two more in the first 10 minutes of the second half to keep it 1-0. Rena Rankin came in to replace Soto in the 60th minute and finish out the game.

McDaniel gave Rankin some early action, and the freshman made a leaping save on a shot from Kiersten Crowley that Rankin pushed over the crossbar. Rankin made a diving save later in the second half with a controlled rebound kept in reach to prevent any net crashers from scoring for the Green Terror.

Jessica Weinoldt did score twice for McDaniel in the second half to push the advantage to 3-0.

Whisten was able to get around a defender on the left side of the box and drive toward goal. Her shot went lower left for her fourth of the season. It was only the fourth goal all season, through 14 games, that the Green Terror have conceded as Etown was only the third team overall to put a goal on McDaniel.

Soto finished with six saves for the Jays while Rankin made two.

Elizabethtown will travel to Drew on Saturday, October 23, for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Rangers.
