MADISON, N.J. -- Wayne Gretzky, and Michael Scott, said you miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take and while the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team didn't score on their first 18 of the game against the Rangers, it was the 19th that mattered most as
Sydney Reich lifted the Blue Jays to a 1-0 overtime victory at Drew.
It was a game dominated by Elizabethtown (7-6-2, 4-1-1 Landmark) on the offensive stat sheet as the Blue Jays outshot the host Rangers, 19-7, including only allowing Drew (6-9-1, 1-4-1 Landmark) one shot on goal.
Despite nearly doubling the Rangers in shots in the first half, 11-6, the game went to halftime as a scoreless draw.
The Jays' defense continued it's defensive dominance in the second 45 minutes, conceding just a single shot to Drew, though still, Etown couldn't punch through and take the lead.
Bailey Groff's header was saved in the 54th minute.
Marissa Lapinsky had an opportunity stopped by Drew goalie Anthi Panayides.Â
Maddie McWhinney had the final attempt of the second half for either side, but it remained a 0-0 game through the full 90, which meant overtime.
Elizabethtown wasted little time and the only shot of the first overtime period was all that was needed. Lapinsky got the right end line and dribbled toward goal. Her diagonal ball went into the box to an oncoming Reich, who lined up for a one-time effort. Her right-footed shot was lofted over the goalie and into the upper left of the net. Before even hitting the netting, Reich knew she had the game-winner for her team, hands raised in celebration as the team poured off the sideline after a 1-0 OT win for the Blue Jays.
Etown still has an opportunity to host a Landmark Conference semifinal, but must first get a win over Scranton next Saturday, October 30, coupled with a Susquehanna loss. The Blue Jays currently sit in the three-spot, two points behind second-place Susquehanna. Next Saturday's game with the Royals at Ira R. Herr Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
