River Hawks too much despite McWhinney's super strike

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Unruly weather took over Saturday's Homecoming game between the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team and Susquehanna. The River Hawks were able to hand the Blue Jays their first loss in conference play of the season with a 3-1 win. Maddie McWhinney scored her first career goal for Etown in the loss.

Emily Wertz put Susquehanna (8-4, 4-1 Landmark) ahead in the 15th minute as she got into the box and, despite being corralled by a number of goalside defenders, was still able to slip a shot into the left of the goal to make it 1-0.

McWhinney answered for the Blue Jays and did she ever. The sophomore took a pass from Ava Whisten and from well outside the 18, unleashed a super strike that left the goalie hardly any time to react as it sailed into the top netting for the first of her career. Elizabethtown (6-5-2, 3-1-1 Landmark) was level at 1-1 in the 39th minute.

The River Hawks wasted no time getting back in front as Olivia Ricci made it 2-1 just 47 seconds later. Susquehanna led by the same score at halftime and doubled the Jays in shot count, 12-6.

There was only one goal scored in the second half as the teams battled each other along with the elements. Unfortunately for Elizabethtown, the goal belonged to the River Hawks as Wertz struck for a second time in the game, in the 53rd minute, to make it 3-1.

Sydney Reich had Etown's only shot on goal in the second half, which came after Wertz's made it a two-goal deficit. Reich's bid to get a goal back in the 54th minute was denied by Carlie Marquette, who had four saves in the game. Trinity Soto made seven in goal for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown will host McDaniel in non-conference action at Ira R. Herr Field on Tuesday, October 19, at 7 p.m.
