Baseball Finishes Spring Break Trip with Sweep of Maritime

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Elizabethtown College baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip with two more wins, topping Maritime, 12-4 and 11-5, Friday afternoon in non-conference action.

With the two wins, the Blue Jays now sit at 8-2 on the season, while the Privateers fall to 3-3.

Senior Derrick Manning finished the day 5-6 with three doubles, three RBI and four runs scored. Classmate Riley McGinley combined for four hits with two RBI and two runs score, while freshman Ben Watson and sophomore Robbie Bertucio registered four RBI apiece.

GAME ONE: ELIZABETHTOWN 12 MARITIME 4
The Blue Jays wasted little time getting up on the Privateers, scoring seven runs in the top of the first. With the first three batters getting on base, senior Mike Christy started the run parade, earning a walk and bringing Watson around to score. After junior Andrew Fisher scored on a wild pitch and an RBI single by McGinley, Bertucio busted things open with a single up the middle, plating both McGinley and Christy, giving Elizabethtown a 5-0 lead. The Blue Jays added two more runs in the opening frame to a 7-0 advantage into the bottom of the inning.

Maritime managed to get three runs back in the bottom of the first, making the score 7-3, but Elizabethtown responded with two more runs in the top of the second. Junior Arley Shepherd brought the first run across, reaching on a fielder's choice, scoring Manning. Sophomore Tyler McGonigle then walked with the bases loaded for the second run of the second and a 9-3 lead for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown tacked on three more runs and held the Privateers to one, taking game one of the doubleheaders, 12-4.

Junior Joseph Sarich (3-0) pitched six innings, scattering three hits and allowing three earned runs while striking out nine. Sarich leads the Landmark in wins and is second with 20 strikeouts.

GAME TWO: ELIZABETHTOWN 11 MARITIME 5
Elizabethtown got off to an early start once again, scoring six runs in bottom of the second for the 6-0 lead. Bertucio and Watson started the charge with RBI's before Fisher doubled down the left field line, plating both McGonigle and sophomore James Vito. Finishing off the scoring in the inning was RBI double from Manning and Christy for the six run cushion.

Maritime never threatened in game two, as the Blue Jays went up by as many as nine (11-2) on their way to taking game two, 11-5.

Sophomore Eric Sipling (2-1) earned the game two win, pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out six.

Elizabethtown absolutely mashed in Florida, hitting .398 with 104 hits, 87 runs scored and 73 RBI.

The Blue Jays are back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 10 against Frank & Marshall. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
