FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Elizabethtown College baseball team banged out 39 hits and racked up 38 runs on the day, taking two from Muskingum, 18-13 and 20-7, in non-conference action on Thursday.
With the wins, the Blue Jays improve to 6-2 overall, while the Fighting Muskies fall to 3-4 on the year.
Freshman
Ben Watson launched his first career home run, going a combined 4-8 with three RBI, four runs scored and a double. Senior
Derek Manning tallied seven total RBI, while senior
Riley McGinley and
Mike Christy, junior
JT Thompson and sophomore
Tyler McGonigle all recorded triples. Junior
Arley Shepherd launched Elizabethtown's other home run on the day.
GAME ONE: ELIZABETHTOWN 18 MUSKINGUM 13
With Muskingum up 2-1, the Blue Jays took control of the game in the bottom of the third with four runs to move ahead 5-2. Thompson highlighted the four run charge with a double to left field, plating junior
Andrew Fisher and Watson.
Holding a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Jays continued to pour it on, scoring six more runs to increase its advantage to 10 (13-3). Watson started the scoring with a two run home run off the top of the wall in right field. Manning, Thompson and McGinley would each tally RBI in the inning aiding in the double-digit cushion for Elizabethtown.
The Fighting Muskies would not disappear however, closing within three, but the Blue Jays tacked on five more runs to take game one 18-13.
Junior
Tyler Dunbar (1-0) took home his first win of the season, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out six.
GAME TWO: ELIZABETHTOWN 20 MUSKINGUM 7
Muskingum once again took the early lead after one inning (1-0), but Elizabethtown grabbed control of the game in the top of the second with seven runs. Fisher and Manning each had a RBI in the inning, while the Blue Jays took advantage of a two errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball.
The Fighting Muskies closed within three (7-4) after the third before Elizabethtown erupted again, plating five more runs in the fourth. Fisher got the scoring started with a double to right field, plating both Watson and McGonigle to increase the Blue Jays advantage to five (9-4). Manning would knock an RBI double to right followed by a RBI triple from Thompson to close out the inning with a 12-4 lead.
The Blue Jays would tack on eight more runs to bring the team's total on the day to 38 runs and give Elizabethtown their sixth win of the season, 20-7.
Freshman
Shane Haffner (1-0) registered his first career win, allowing one earned run on eight hits and striking out two in five innings of work. Sophomore
Matt Barton and freshman
Ben Stovall combined to pitch the final four innings allowing two earned runs and striking out four.
Elizabethtown wraps up its spring break trip tomorrow, Mar. 5 against Maritime (N.Y.). First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
