Fasolo homers as Blue Jays beat Regis, fall to Rose-Hulman

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Lindsey Fasolo hit her first home run of the season on Wednesday for the Elizabethtown College softball team as the Blue Jays split the day with a win over Regis (Mass.) before falling to Rose-Hulman to close out the day. Paige Phillips got her first win of the season for E-town in game one.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 8, Regis (Mass.) 4
Grace Hussey, Ashley Mistichelli, and Fasolo combined for seven of Elizabethtown's (3-5) 13 hits in the game against the Pride. Hussey and Mistichelli each had two hits while Fasolo pumped out three, including her first homer.

It was Regis (1-4) that struck first, getting a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, but from there, Phillips held the Pride in check as she only allowed two runs over the remaining six innings of work.

The Blue Jays got a run back in the second on Fasolo's home run that cleared the fence in left field. E-town would then grab the lead in the third inning as Kaitlyn Witmer singled through the right side to bring in Hussey. Fasolo followed with an RBI double to right center.

A steal play worked in Regis' favor in the bottom half of the third inning as they tied the game 3-3.

Elizabethtown came right back in the next half inning, scoring another three runs to retake the lead. With an out in the inning, Jillian Meitzler reached first safely on a well-placed bunt. Courtney Fitzsimons singled to right to move her up to second. Then, Vanessa Boop singled up the middle to allow Meitzler to score to make it 4-3. Two batters later, Mistichelli sent a two-run single up the middle to score Fitzsimons and Boop.

The Pride grabbed a run back in the fourth to get it to 6-4, but Phillips only conceded one hit over the final two innings to keep Regis at bay.

Mistichelli added an RBI double to center in the sixth and Phillips helped her own cause with an RBI double of her own as E-town wound up doubling up the Pride, 8-4.

Game 2: Rose-Hulman 6, Elizabethtown 2
Neither team could find a run over the first two innings, and it was Rose-Hulman (3-3) that struck first with a five-run third inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Meitzler got the Blue Jays on the board with an RBI hit to make it 5-1 in the fourth. The Fightin' Engineers added another run in the fifth to get their lead back to five.

Hussey made it a 6-2 game with a steal of home, her sixth stolen base of the season.

The Jays made one final run at Rose-Hulman in the seventh. Boop led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to short. Hussey singled to third to put two runners on. Both freshman moved up on a steal situation to put a pair of runners in scoring position.

Mistichelli brought one run home with a sac fly to center field. Witmer then drove in Hussey with an RBI single to center. Gillian Toomey came in to pinch run for Witmer and moved up to second on Fasolo's base hit. Kady Johnson came in to pinch run at first and with a runner in scoring position that could have made it a one-run game, Rose-Hulman was able get the final two outs as E-town's rally came up short.

Hussey, Fasolo, Phillips, Meitzler, and Boop all had two hits for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown has Thursday off and will be back on Friday, March 6, with games against Misericordia and Northland.
