With the split the Blue Jays sit at 4-2 on the season, while the Lords finish the day 1-2.
Sophomore
Robbie Bertucio combined to go 4-6 with a triple and three runs scored. Freshman
Ben Watson tallied two RBI and a triple, while junior
Andrew Fisher also registered two RBI.
GAME ONE: ELIZABETHTOWN 6 KENYON 5
Tied at one going into the bottom of the second, Watson stepped in with runners at first and second and knocked a triple to left-center field, clearing the bases and giving Elizabethtown a 3-1 lead.
After Kenyon closed within one in top of the fourth (3-2), the Blue Jays extended its advantage back to two in the bottom of the inning after a RBI double by sophomore
Tyler McGonigle plated Bertucio.
The Lords managed to tie the game at four in the fifth inning, but Elizabethtown would take back the momentum, loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Fisher took advantage of the opportunity and sent a double up the middle, scoring both McGonigle and Bertucio and putting the Blue Jays up 6-4.
Junior
Kelly Holdren entered in the seventh to pitch and after giving up an RBI double, he recorded his second save of the season, striking out the final batter of the game for the 6-5 win.
Freshman
Nick Ortega started on the mound for Elizabethtown, earning a no decision and allowing three earned runs on nine hits and striking out three. Junior
Reece Jones (1-0) secured the win in relief, pitching one and two third innings, striking out three and allowing no runs.
GAME TWO: ELIZABETHTOWN 3 KENYON 5
Tied at one going into the top of the third, the Blue Jays broke the deadlock to take a two run lead (3-1). Senior
Riley McGinley slapped a single, bringing in senior
Mike Christy from third to put Elizabethtown up one.
After McGinley advanced to third on a wild pitch, junior
JT Thompson knocked him in with a sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Blue Jays a two run cushion.
Kenyon rallied with four runs in the sixth to go ahead by two (5-3), but Elizabethtown attempted to answer in the top of the seventh. McGonigle worked a walk to start the inning and then advanced to third after a double by Thompson with no outs. The Lords managed to get an out in the next at bat but then intentionally walked senior
Derek Manning to load the bases. That, however, is how the game would end, as Kenyon worked its way out of the jam and took its first win of the season, 5-3.
In his first collegiate start, freshman
Zach Silfies (0-1) pitched five and a third innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out four.
The Blue Jays return to action on Thursday, Mar. 4 against Muskingum. First pitch of game one is set for 10 a.m.
