Blue Jays celebrate Senior Night in style with sweep of Widener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team celebrated its Senior Night for Nick Baxter on Wednesday before the Blue Jays won three straight sets to blank Widener, 3-0. Appropriately, Baxter ended the match with his team-leading 14th kill as E-town improved to 14-9 on the season.

It was a 3-3 game early in the first set before Baxter received the ball to serve. A Widener (5-7) service error gave the Jays a one-point lead, then Tony Camillo and Steven Swain combined for a block. Baxter followed with a pair of aces to make it 7-3. It was all part of an extended 9-1 run as Elizabethtown (14-9) took control of the set.

The Pride struggled offensively to get anything going and wound up with the same numbers of kills as errors in the first set (5 and 5). Meanwhile, E-town hit .500 over the course of the first set and ultimately went up 1-0 in the match after a 25-11 first-set victory.

Widener came out focused in the second set and went ahead 4-1 through the first five points. Ahead 5-2 on Elizabethtown, Swain's kill from Dan Barckholtz started off a spurt for the Blue Jays to get the hosts in front. Swain's second kill of the run made it 7-5 in favor of E-town and they wouldn't relinquish the lead the remainder of the set.

The Pride was within five at 16-11 after a Jays' service error, but another quick run from EC pushed the lead back to nine and within five points of going up 2-0 in the match. They were able to cut the deficit back down to six, but a service error put Elizabethtown at set point and Camillo finished off the second set with the kill.

Blake Hildebrand recorded consecutive service aces early in set three to get the Blue Jays going. Cameron Krebs added one of his own as E-town led 6-3.

With Tim Zieber setting, the Jays took a four-point lead and tacked on six straight points to put Widener down ten, 17-7. The Pride could only get as close as eight and the final five points of the third set went to E-town, three by Baxter himself including match point.

Baxter had a match-high 14 kills on his senior night while Swain added nine and Hildebrand with seven. Barckholtz finished his night with 17 assists in two sets while Zieber provided 10 in the third. Joey Nelson led the defense with six digs.

The Blue Jays are scheduled to host Cairn next Wednesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. for a CVC matchup.
