CLERMONT, Fla. -- Lindsey Fasolo drove in five runs as the Elizabethtown College softball team split on opening day of the season at The Spring Games held at Legends Way Ballfields. The Blue Jays beat Northern Vermont-Johnson before falling to York (Pa.).
Game 1: Elizabethtown 18, Northern Vermont-Johnson 0 (F/5)
Elizabethtown (1-1) got to work right away in the top of the first, scoring six runs to take a commanding lead on the Badgers. Fasolo,
Paige Phillips,
Kaitlyn Witmer, and
Kady Johnson all had RBIs in the inning for the Jays.
Fasolo added her third RBI of the game in the top of the inning, a five-run inning for E-town.
Taylor Herman doubled to left center to drive in Fasolo. Then,
Amelia Lark singled to second as Witmer scored on the play.
Courtney Fitzsimons and
Brinley Schmidt both singled in runs to complete the scoring.
Meghan Giusti, 2-for-2 in the game, singled to third base in the fourth to bring home a run, the first of her career. Elizabethtown led 13-0 after four innings.
In the fifth, Fitzsimons and Fasolo added to their RBI totals while
Morgan Bellavia drove in her first career run with a base hit.
Ashley Mistichelli doubled down the left field line to bring in Giusti in the inning as Elizabethtown added five more runs.
Tori Caputo made her first collegiate start for the Blue Jays and allowed only one hit in three innings of work before
Sarah Hartinger came in to finish out the game. Caputo struck out five batters without allowing a walk. Hartinger had one strikeout over the final two innings.
Game 2: York (Pa.) 20, Elizabethtown 1 (F/5)
The second game didn't go the same way for Elizabethtown in the end.
A bases loaded walk gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Phillips didn't allow a run over the next two innings to keep the Jays within a run.
Grace Hussey was hit by a pitch in the first and then stole second as the Blue Jays had a runner in scoring position. Taylor Lindsay was able to get York (Pa.) (2-0) out of the inning after inducing a ground out to end the bottom of the first. Lindsay then returned the side in order over the next two innings while her offense piled up the runs.
The Spartans exploded for a big fourth inning with 18 runs. E-town got one back in the bottom of the fourth to break up the shutout bid. Hussey went opposite way with a base knock through the left side before stealing her second base of the game. Fasolo singled to advance Hussey to third. Caputo, who came in to replace Phillips in the circle, grounded out to shortstop, but brought the run home for her first career RBI.
Lindsay didn't allow a hit in the fifth as the Spartans closed out the game to remain unbeaten.
Elizabethtown will play another pair of games tomorrow, beginning with Concordia-Moorhead at 10:15 a.m.
