BUENA VISTA, Va. -- After a win over Eastern Mennonite last night, the Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team went for a second on its Virginia road trip, but were blanked by Southern Virginia on Saturday at Knight Arena.
Nick Baxter had a team-high 11 kills while
Mark Hall was credited with a team-high three blocks.
Dan Barckholtz set up Baxter and
Tony Camillo for back-to-back kills in the first set and Elizabethtown (11-9, 2-4 CVC) led 11-7. Southern Virginia came back with a six-point rally to grab the lead, 13-7, and force the Jays into a timeout.
Hall and
Steven Swain combined on the block to tie the game at 14-14 as E-town responded, but another quick spurt from the Knights put the Blue Jays in jeopardy of falling in the opening set. They were down seven, but couldn't rally back as SVU took it 25-17.
Southern Va. took five of the first six points in the second set to get out in front. Ahead by nine, 14-5,
Blake Hildebrand started off a series that saw Elizabethtown get the next three points to get back within six. From there, the Knights outscored the Blue Jays 11-4 and went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-12 second-set victory.
With Camillo serving in the third set, the Jays built up a 7-3 lead to start the third set. The freshman had a pair of aces during a 6-0 run. Swain's kill a bit later in the set made it 13-7.
The Knights used three straight aces and a kill from McKay Walker to get within two, 13-11.
The teams remained close as E-town closed in on extending the match into a fourth set. Hildebrand's kill made it set point for the Blue Jays, but Southern Virginia was able to tie it 24-24 before scoring the next two points to close out the match.
Barckholtz had 21 assists in the three sets for Elizabethtown. Paul Clark led the Knights with 10 kills.
Elizabethtown will play host Sarah Lawrence and Purchase on Saturday, March 7.
