Blue Jays edge Alvernia for first win

READING, Pa. -- Alvernia had a chance to tie Wednesday's non-conference game with the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team with time winding down, but Mirthe Berends caused the game-ending turnover as E-town hung on for a 14-13 win over the Golden Wolves. Kate Ziegler led the Jays with a team-high six goals.

Alvernia (1-2) scored first, but Ziegler's first of six a few minutes later tied the game at 1-1 in the first five minutes. Hannah Cressman recorded her first career goal two minutes later to give Elizabethtown (1-1) a one-goal lead before Ziegler made it 3-1 with less than 20 minutes to go in the first half.

The Golden Wolves stormed back with the next four goals of the game to jump in front. Lexie Sharp and Ziegler helped the Blue Jays get level at 5-5, but were outscored 4-1 the remainder of the half as Alvernia led 9-6 at the break.

E-town battled back from the three-goal deficit to pull even for a second time in the game as Sharp made it 9-9 with 24:53 left in regulation.

Though Alvernia grabbed an 11-9 lead with back-to-back goals, it was all Elizabethtown the rest of the way. Ziegler gave the Jays the lead for good with a little over 13 minutes to go as Cressman assisted on the goal.

The Golden Wolves made a run late, but a clear attempt failed with under 10 seconds to go as Berends broke up the play as the clock ran down to zeroes and Elizabethtown earned its first win of the 2020 campaign.

Caity Howell made seven of her nine saves in the second half to earn the win.

Elizabethtown will host Hood on Saturday, February 29, at 12 p.m.
