BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Mikayla Ruth reached 1,000 points for her career in the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's 76-60 loss at Moravian on Saturday. Ruth led the Blue Jays with 13 points and despite the loss, E-town still finished as the third spot in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs.
Though Elizabethtown (12-12, 8-6 Landmark) trailed in the waning minutes of the first quarter, it was Ruth's three-pointer, which earned her her 1,000th career point with the make, that sparked a run that wound up getting the Blue Jays the lead by the end of the first after trailing 14-10. Needing three points coming into the contest, Ruth's trey put her right on the 1,000 mark, becoming the 29th player in program history to reach it and the third player for E-town this season (
Lydia Lawson,
Veronica Christ).
Moravian (15-10, 8-6 Landmark) outscored the Jays by ten points in the second quarter, whoever, and went into halftime ahead by eight, 38-30. Maddie Capuano led all scorers at the break with 16 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor.
Angie Hawkins had a team-high eight points for E-town.
The Greyhounds totaled 23 third-quarter points while they held Elizabethtown to just 14 as the lead extended into double digits. The Jays outscored Moravian in the fourth, but only by a point, as the Hounds went on to take the win.
Christ added 11 points for the Jays while Hawkins also reached double figures with 10. Christ's 11 rebounds gave the junior another double-double.
With Scranton winning and Catholic losing, the third-seed came down to tiebreakers between Elizabethtown and Moravian. Due to the Jays' season split with the Royals and Scranton having beaten Moravian twice, E-town finishes third.
The Blue Jays will head back to Washington, D.C. to take on the second-seeded Cardinals on Wednesday, February 26, at 7 p.m. in a Landmark Conference semifinal. The two teams meet for the second consecutive season in the conference semis.
