WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Elizabethtown women's volleyball continued its early season roll, running its winning streak to seven games with victories over Lycoming (3-2) and Alfred State (3-0) on the final day of the Lycoming Invitational Saturday afternoon.
With the four wins on the weekend, the women earned the Tournament Championship while sophomore
Allison Fischer was named Tournament MVP. Junior
Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
With the two wins, the Blue Jays are now 8-1 on the season and off to their best start since the 2007 team started the year 10-1. The '07 team would go on to finish the year at 32-7, win the Commonwealth Championship and make it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Freshman
Bryanna Miller finished Saturday with a team-high 27 kills, while tacking on 26 digs. Sophomore
Rileigh Hudock and freshman
Sarah Hanks each tallied 40 assists, and Tietze-Di Toro registered 31 digs, including the 1,000th of her career.
ELIZABETHTOWN 3, LYCOMING 2 (25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 15-13)
- SET ONE: Tied at 13, the Warriors moved ahead by two, scoring back-to-back points. The Blue Jays came back to tie the game at 16, and took control of the opening set from thee, pushing ahead with four-straight points highlighted by two kills from sophomore Allison Fischer. Lycoming would only get as close as two, as Elizabethtown took set one 25-18.
- SET TWO: Similar to the first set, the score was tied midway through at 16. The Warriors would once again move ahead by two (18-16), before the Blue Jays responded and knotted things up at 18 and then 20. Elizabethtown kept the momentum and charged to the end of the second on a 5-1 run for the 25-21 win. Freshman Courtney Westman and senior Elle Shatto shut the door on the final point with a big block.
- SET THREE: Similar to the first two sets, the third was locked up at 16 once again. Elizabethtown would move ahead first time, going up 19-17 forcing a Lycoming timeout. Out of the timeout, the Warriors scored five straight points to take the lead. The Blue Jays would tie it one last time at 21, but could not hold the momentum, as Lycoming took set three, 25-22, and hold off the straight set loss.
- SET FOUR: Lycoming pushed it to five with a victory in the fourth set. With Elizabethtown holding a two-point lead (17-15), the Warriors responded, scoring five straight points for the 20-17 advantage. Down 24-19, Elizabethtown mounted one last rally to close within two, but Lycoming closed out the set 25-22.
- SET FIVE: The Warriors jumped out to a four point lead (7-3) in the final stanza, looking to complete the comeback swiftly. The Blue Jays answered, tying the score at seven. Elizabethtown then made the final pushing, surging ahead for the three point lead at (11-8) and then again 13-10. Lycoming closed within one, one last time (14-13), but the Blue Jays closed out its second-straight five set victory, 15-13, thanks to a kill from Miller.
ELIZABETHTOWN 3, ALFRED STATE 0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-10)
- SET ONE: The Blue Jays took the opening set in dominant fashion, dropping the Pioneers 25-11. Elizabethtown finished the opening stanza hitting .417 with 12 kills and five aces.
- SET TWO: The second set was tighter from the start as Alfred State hung around early, down by only three midway through the second. The Blue Jays, however, turned on cruise control at this point, going on a 12-4 run to move ahead 2-0. Elizabethtown continued to hit at a high percentage, tallying a .429 percentage with 14 kills.
- SET THREE: The Blue Jays wrapped up their second straight-set victory of the season, topping the Pioneers 25-10 in the third. The final set was never in doubt, as Elizabethtown ran out to a 15-6 lead and never looked back.
