Wilkinson nets lone goal in Jays' loss at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The battle of a pair of 2-0 teams coming into Saturday night's non-conference matchup at Clark Field ended in a 2-1 come-from-behind win for the Bullets. The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team had the lead in the second half, but two goals in a ten minute span helped Gettysburg prevail over the Blue Jays.

Gettysburg (3-0) held the upper hand offensively in the first half, leading in shots and corners after 45 minutes. The Bullets ended with 10 shots and forced goalie Trinity Soto into three first-half saves for Elizabethtown (2-1).

Maddie Cunningham was tested throughout the second half by E-town, including 1:34 into the period as she had to turn away Samantha Wanamaker's chance on goal. Soto then made a pair of saves in the 50th and 51st minutes to keep it 0-0. Wanamaker had a second attempt on frame kept out, this time on a team save by the Bullets in the 56th minute.

Moments later, however, Kristin Wilkinson's shot would find the netting as she put the Blue Jays on top 1-0 in the 57th minute with her first of the year and second of her career. Wilkinson took a cross from Lydia Lawson and put her shot into the lower right corner of the goal.

Gettysburg responded only a few minutes later as the lead didn't last. Erika Muskus found the right corner of the Jays' goal to tie the game up at 1-1 in the 61st minute.

Ten minutes later, Grace Slevin gave GC its first lead of the night off a pass from Emma Bedell.

Brinley Beveridge had E-town's last opportunity on target, but Cunningham made her fifth and final save of the second half to preserve Gettysburg's lead.

Soto made consecutive saves late to keep Elizabethtown in it, but the Bullets were able to run out the clock and hand the Jays their first loss of the year.

The women's soccer team will host Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday, September 10, at 7 p.m. at Ira R. Herr Field.
