Field hockey pulls out overtime win over Eastern

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In a wild game with four lead changes and four ties, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team was able to outlast Eastern in overtime Wednesday afternoon 5-4 thanks to a pair of goals from Lauren Scheib, including the game winning goal in OT. Grace Hardy and Brooke Zehr scored their first goals of the season while Grace Hussey recorded the first goal of her career.

Abigail Geisler gave Eastern (3-5) the lead on the first shot of the game from the visitors as she knocked in a loose ball close to goal.

Hardy knotted the game up for the first time at 1-1, scoring on Elizabethtown's (2-5) first shot of the game less than four minutes later. Madeline Kachel saved Ali Balmer's shot with six minutes left in the opening quarter and the game went into the second still tied.

Geisler doubled the Eagles' lead 1:35 into the second with her second of the contest and eighth of the season. She was in the right spot for a rebound off a save to bury it into the cage to return the lead to EU.

Eastern had multiple opportunities to extend its lead with three consecutive penalty corners, but the Jays held strong and did not give up another goal. Kachel denied Becky Howard in close on the final corner of the sequence.

Midway through the second, Scheib notched her first of the game, deflecting a pass from Madison Kubik and directing it into the goal to tie it once again. Minutes later, E-town came down the field on the counter. Zehr delivered a pass across goal and Hussey was there to tip it into the goal for her first collegiate goal and give the Blue Jays their first lead of the afternoon, 3-2, with 2:27 left in the half.

The lead lasted 59 seconds as Howard made it 3-3, scoring on a rebound and sending the teams into halftime locked up at 3-3.

Goalies Marley Redfield and Kali Kishter each played a portion of the second quarter for their teams. Redfield made two saves in the quarter while Kishter made one.

A scoreless third quarter raised the stakes even higher for the final 15 minutes.

Eastern would hop back in front 1:12 in the fourth as Balmer sent a raised shot toward the far post. The ball clanged off the upper right post and into the cage to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead with plenty of time left.

Kachel, who was back in for the second half of the game, made several saves to keep E-town within a goal. They would turn out to be big stops as the Jays were at the other end pressing for the game-tying goal.

Zehr would eventually give her team that goal, scoring her first of the season with less than 10 minutes to play. Scheib flicked the ball over to Zehr, who was stationed by the left post to cram it in and tie it 4-4.

Elizabethtown was going for the win in regulation as Chloe Smith and Scheib each had chances on goal, but were denied by starting goalie Kylie Troyer. Eastern held off the attack and forced overtime.

The Blue Jays had more of the ball in overtime, and after a few times up and down the field, seniors Olivia Beachley and Scheib connected for the game-winning score. Beachley was able to beat her defender and drive in on goal. Her pass to the middle was met by Scheib, who put in her second of the game to snap a three-game skid for E-town.

Elizabethtown will begin Landmark Conference play on Saturday, September 28, at Susquehanna for a 1 p.m. matchup with the River Hawks.
