DALLAS, Pa. – Elizabethtown women's volleyball continued its winning way, topping Misericordia and Oswego State on day one of the Misericordia Tournament Friday night.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 14-1 and extend their winning streak to 13 matches. At 14-1, Elizabethtown is off to its best start in program history.
Senior
Elle Shatto finished the night with a team-high 36 kills and 22 digs to pace the Blue Jays. Freshman
Sarah Hanks registered 34 assists while junior Aiyana Tietze Di-Toro led Elizabethtown with 45 digs.
ELIZABETHTOWN 3, MISERICORDIA 2 (22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-12)
• SET ONE: Tied at 19 late in the opening set, the Cougars moved ahead by two, 22-20. Elizabethtown moved within one twice over the final few points, but could not come all the way back, as Misericordia took the first set, 25-22.
• SET TWO: Down by two points late, The Blue Jays battle back to take a one point lead at 23-22 thanks to a kill and ace by Shatto. The Cougars however stole the momentum right back, taking the final three points and the second set, 25-23.
• SET THREE: Elizabethtown began its comeback in the third set, jumping out to a 10-8 lead halfway through the set. The Cougars however battled back for a two point advantage (19-17). The Blue Jays did not allow the lead to stand though, going on an 8-3 run to end the third and grab the third, 25-21.
• SET FOUR: Elizabethtown raced out to a six point lead (11-5), forcing a Cougars' timeout. After the timeout, Misericordia closed within three (15-12) before the Blue Jays scored three straight points behind kills from freshmen
Bryanna Miller and
Courtney Westman to move ahead 18-12. The Cougars would only get as close as four points, before the Blue Jays tied up the match at two with the 25-18 victory.
• SET FIVE: After falling behind 4-1 in the final set, Elizabethtown tallied five straight points to take a 6-4 lead. As the two teams battled through the decisive set, the Blue Jays found some breathing room with a three point lead (10-7) after back-to-back kills from Miller and Shatto. The score would be tied one final time at 11 before Elizabethtown went on a 4-1 run to complete the comeback and earn the 3-2 victory.
ELIZABETHTOWN 3 OSWEGO STATE 1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 25-19)
• SET ONE: Down by six (14-8) midway through the opening set, Elizabethtown began to rally, scoring four straight points capped off by a kill from freshman
Elizabeth Zeiber. The Blue Jays finally managed to tie the match at 21 and then Shatto gave the Elizabethtown the lead with a kill. The Lakers managed to tie the score one last time (22-22) before Elizabethtown rattled off the final three points for the opening set win, 25-22.
• SET TWO: Oswego State bounced back in the second set, battling with the Blue Jays all the way to a 19-19 tie. The Lakers pushed its lead to 21-19, forcing an Elizabethtown timeout. The Blue Jays managed to tie the score one final time at 21, before Oswego State wrapped up the second set on a 4-1 run for the 25-22 win and tie things at one.
• SET THREE: Elizabethtown took the momentum back in the third set, racing out to an 8-3 lead. After the Lakers closed within two (8-6), the Blue Jays pushed the advantage to six (12-6) after a block from sophomore
Allison Fischer and freshman
Julie Baker. Oswego State would not recover after that, scoring only nine more points as Elizabethtown finished off the 25-15 win and move in front 2-1.
• SET FOUR: After a tight score early in the fourth, the Blue Jays took control, running out to a 12-4 lead. Elizabethtown continued to roll through the final set, pushing its lead to 13 (20-7). The Lakers would go on a late run to close within five (23-18) but that is all as the Blue Jays wrapped up their 14th win of the season, 25-18.
