ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Lydia Lawson became just the fifth player in the Elizabethtown College women's soccer program's history to reach 100 career points Saturday night at Ira R. Herr Field. Lawson scored twice on Senior Night, including one from the penalty spot as the Blue Jays held on to beat Stevenson, 2-1.
SENIOR DAY
Though the game remained scoreless for nearly 75 minutes, both teams had opportunities to put one or more into the back of the net. Elizabethtown (3-1-1) had the first scoring chance of the game as
Madison Burnham put one on frame. Goalie Keegan Caffrey made one of her game-high 12 saves to keep it scoreless.
Trinity Soto stopped a shot off the foot of Delayna Witouski at the other end a minute later, one of six saves in the game for the first-year starter between the posts.
As the first half wore on, the Blue Jays continued peppering the Mustangs' goal. Lawson had shots saved by Caffrey minutes apart as the senior tried to hit the 100-point plateau after coming into the night sitting on 98 points.
Though E-town outshot Stevenson (1-3-1) 11-6, the game remained tied at 0-0 through the first 45 minutes.
The Blue Jays' back line held strong against STE, not allowing a shot on frame for the first 23 minutes of the second half. Meanwhile, EC seemed to be getting closer and closer to the game's opening goal. Burnham added another chance on target in the 59th minute that Caffrey saved.
Leigh Ungerleider and
Natalie Nye also had scoring opportunities stopped by the Mustangs' junior goalie.
Elizabethtown finally broke through in the 75th minute.
Janelle Barna played Ungerleider down the right side and the speedy sophomore forward got to the end line and crossed back across the front of goal, where Lawson was waiting at the far post for the one-touch finish for her fifth of the season and 100th career point.
Off the ensuing kickoff, the Jays gained possession right back and were down in the 18 yard box of Stevenson. The whistle blew as the referee deemed too much contact in the box and E-town was awarded a penalty kick. Lawson stepped up and knocked it home for her second of the night and sixth of the season.
The momentum was well in Elizabethtown's favor, but Stevenson turned the tide in the 84th minute on Marissa Inglisa's goal. That cut the deficit in half with 6:07 left to play.
The Mustangs pressed late for the game-tying goal, but the Jays were able to hang on to get the win.
Lawson's 102 career points rank her fifth all-time while her 46 career goals are fourth all-time. The senior came into the season tied for fourth in goals and seventh in points.
Elizabethtown will host St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, September 21, for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference matchup at Ira R. Herr Field.
