#10 Franklin & Marshall sends E-town to season-opening loss

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- It was tough sledding against one of the top ten teams in the country as tenth-ranked Franklin & Marshall visited Wolf Field on Friday in the Elizabethtown College field hockey team's season-opener. The Diplomats outshot E-town 20-5 and left the non-conference matchup with a 6-1 win over the Blue Jays. Chloe Smith scored the first goal of her career for Elizabethtown.

Lily Mynott slipped a pass square across the circle to Melissa Gula with less than three minutes to go in the first quarter. Gula one-touched the ball into the right side of the cage to give F&M (1-0) a 1-0 lead heading into the second.

Darby Klopp scored the first of her two goals in the game a little over two minutes into the second stanza and doubled the Dips lead to 2-0 as she pounced on a loose ball near goal. Erin Coverdale made it 3-0 later in the quarter after ripping a shot off a corner insert from Addie Peters.

Elizabethtown (0-1) didn't test goalie Christina Seery in the first half as Franklin & Marshall held the Blue Jays without a shot over the first 30 minutes.

Madison Kubik registered a shot on frame with the third quarter winding down. Seery made the save, but the result of the play ended up as a corner for the Jays. Olivia Beachley inserted the ball out top to Scheib, who shuffled it over to Smith. The freshman settled the ball and drilled a low line drive straight into the small gap between Seery and the left post. The goal was the first of her career.

F&M led 6-1 after three and held on by the same score. Madeline Kachel and Kali Kishter each saw action for Elizabethtown. Kachel had three saves in 45 minutes while Kishter made four in the third quarter. Seery finished with three for the Diplomats.

The field hockey team hops right back into action tomorrow at Wolf Field when they host Denison at 12 p.m.
