SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team held Scranton to its lowest goal output of the season Thursday night at Weiss Field. In the process, the Blue Jays snapped the Royals' four-game win streak and handed them their first Landmark Conference loss to pull into a three-way first-place tie.
Scott Nizolak led E-town with a hat trick and
Jeremy Klipple tied a season-high with five ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nizolak recorded the first of his three goals 2:38 into Thursday night's game to give Elizabethtown (8-6, 4-1 Landmark) a 1-0 lead.
- Connor Kirkwood tied the game three minutes for Scranton (9-7, 4-1 Landmark).
-
Nick Cost and
Ben Hiltebeitel added first quarter goals for the Blue Jays, who led 3-1 after one.
Mike Scrafano provided the assist on Hiltebeitel's goal, one of two helpers in the game for the junior.
- Scrafano assisted on the only goal of the second quarter, which belonged to Nizolak. E-town led 4-1 at halftime.
- Cost set up Nizolak for his hat trick to kick off the third quarter and Elizabethtown was ahead 5-1.
- The Royals got within 5-3 with consecutive goals, but the Jays' defense would hold strong the final 26:01 of the game, not allowing another goal.
-
Cameron Goodling added a goal in the third and fourth quarters, Hiltebeitel registered his second of the game, and
Mike DiGenova capped off the night with a goal as E-town pulled away for the 9-3 win.
-
Tom Mahoney made nine saves in goal for the Blue Jays to move to 8-5 on the season.
- Elizabethtown handled the ball well on its clear attempts, going 21-for-22 in the game.
- Klipple and
Jeff Bloom combined for nine ground balls and Klipple had a team-high three caused turnovers. It was the eighth straight game with at least a GB and CTO for Klipple.
-
Logan Byas,
Jon Knapp,
Zac Knapp, and Cost also picked up multiple ground balls for the Jays.
