Varrato becomes softball's new career hits leader in wins over F&M

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Senior Emma Varrato came into Thursday's non-conference doubleheader with Franklin & Marshall only three hits shy of breaking the Elizabethtown College softball program's all-time record for career hits. Varrato tied the record in game two before singling through the left side to break the record. E-town won both games over the Diplomats by scores of 4-2 and 11-8 for their first sweep of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Elizabethtown 4, Franklin & Marshall 2

- Brinley Schmidt delivered a double to left field that was inches shy of clearing the fence in the second inning to put Elizabethtown (11-17).
- Christina Dark added to the lead with a sac fly RBI in the third inning. Varrato had led off the inning with a single up the middle.
- Schmidt was at it again, this time with a two-RBI single up the middle to bring home Kaitlyn Witmer for a second time and Sarah Personette.
- Franklin & Marshall (10-14) got two runs back in the seventh, but it was too little, too late for the visitors as Amber Sergas finished off her complete game with a popup to Varrato at second.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 11, Franklin & Marshall 8
- The Diplomats took the the early lead on Abby Buell's RBI double down the left field line.
- E-town got the run back and then another two in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Catherine Amos reached on an error that allowed Lindsey Fasolo to score. Schmidt knocked another run-scoring double into the outfield. The extra base hit brought in two runs.
- Jamie Belfer scored on Buell's second double of the game to cut it to 3-2.
- Dark hit her second sacrifice of the day to center to score Varrato in the third as the Jays were now doubling up F&M, 4-2.
- Franklin & Marshall tied it at 4-4 in the fourth.
- Elizabethtown put up a five-spot in the fourth inning to break open the game a bit, which started with Alyssa Wilkinson's RBI double to right center.
- Schmidt hit her third RBI double of the two-game set to plate Taylor Herman, who pinch ran for Wilkinson.
- Varrato sent a 3-2 pitch through the left side to score Schmidt and at the same time, broke the program's all-time hits record of 177 with her 178th career hit.
- Fasolo and Dark added RBIs in the inning and E-town led 9-4 after four.
- Wilkinson and Varrato recorded RBIs in the fifth inning to stretch the lead back up to five after FMC pulled two back on the Jays in the top half of the fifth.
- Sergas came in for EC in the seventh to close out the game after the Diplomats pulled within three, 11-8. The senior earned the win in game one and got the save in game two, her second of the season.
