CLERMONT, Fla. -- For the first time on their spring break trip, the Elizabethtown College softball team failed to come out of a pair of games with a win. The Blue Jays were beaten by Dominican (Ill.) and New England College.
Game 1: Dominican 13, Elizabethtown 4 (F/5)
Dominican (Ill.) (6-3) jumped out 4-0 with four runs in the first inning.
Christina Dark drove in
Paige Phillips in the second for Elizabethtown (3-5) to cut the lead down to 4-1. The hit was the 100th of Dark's career.
The Stars held the Blue Jays scoreless over the next two innings as they built up a 10-1 lead.
Sarah Personette got three of those runs back with a three-run home run in the fifth inning, scoring
Emma Varrato and
Jillian Meitzler.
A three-run shot by Dominican (Ill.) in the fifth ended the game early as the Stars went on to beat the Jays, 13-4. Personette was 2-for-3 in the game.
Game 2: New England College 14, Elizabethtown 2 (F/5)
A big first and fifth inning for New England (5-4) produced 13 of their 14 runs in the game. Elizabethtown's two runs came on
Brinley Schmidt's two RBI single to left field in the second inning, which made it 6-2 at the time.
Eight runs in the fifth by the Pilgrims concluded the game early. Taylor Barbour won her fourth game of the season for NEC.
Schmidt had two of E-town's five hits. Varrato, Phillips, and
Lindsey Fasolo also recorded hits for Elizabethtown.
The softball team will play SUNY Fredonia and Gordon on the final day of the Spring Break Games in Florida.
