Christopher Newport takes over in second half of win against men's lacrosse

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team had upset on its mind in Saturday's non-conference matchup with 16th-ranked Christopher Newport at Wolf Field. The Blue Jays held a 5-2 lead in the second quarter, but the Captains only allowed one goal in the second half to E-town and outscored the Jays 5-0 in the third to take a 10-6 win back to Newport News, Va. Mike Scrafano had a pair of goals for E-town.

Christopher Newport (2-0) went up 2-0 on goals by Dylan Rice, his 13th and 14th of the season. Elizabethtown was up to the challenge brought by the Captains and tallied the next five goals of the game with three to end the first and two more in the second.

E-town's scoring started with Scrafano's team-leading ninth of the year 55 seconds after Rice's goal had made it 2-0. The Blue Jays tied the game in the last 1:11 of the first and took the lead by the end. Cameron Goodling caught a pass from Brandon Sankey cutting across the middle in front of the goal, made the turn, and fired lower left to beat the CNU goalie and tie the game at 2-2. Scrafano's second of the quarter gave EC their first lead at 3-2 with 24 ticks left in the opening period.

Elizabethtown won a season-high 15 faceoffs as Nick Sicilia and Danny Gilbert did their jobs on the restarts at center.

Alex Filbert notched his first of the season at 13:49 of the second quarter to double the Jays' lead to 4-2. Two and a half minutes later, Nick Cost hit the twine, his second of the year, to make it 5-2 as Elizabethtown seemed to be rolling right along. Cost's goal forced Christopher Newport into a timeout to talk things over.

Over the final 11:21, CNU held E-town scoreless and got two goals back to make it 5-4 by halftime.

By the time the first five minutes were gone in the third, the Captains had gone from being down one to up two, 7-5. A costly failed clear turned into Jordan Lee's second goal of the year that tied it 5-5. Griffin Hanes picked up one of the five ground balls of faceoffs in the game for the Captains and on the same possession, Rice had his hat trick to give Chris. Newport the lead at 6-5. Rice added another to make it 7-5.

Five goals in the third put the Captains ahead 9-5. Andrew Watts scored his sixth of the year at 12:10 of the fourth to cut it down to 9-6. Scott Nizolak provided the assist on the goal. It would be the only goal the visitors would allow to the Blue Jays as goalie Scott McAneney made seven second-half saves and finished with 11 in the game.

Tom Mahoney had eight saves for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown will play its second straight ranked opponent when it faces #17 Lynchburg on Sunday, March 10 at the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame Headquarters in Sparks Glencoe, Md. at 2 p.m.
