FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Arley Shepherd hit his first career home run Thursday morning for the Elizabethtown College baseball team, but it came in a losing effort to Penn State Behrend. The Lions sent the Blue Jays to their third straight loss with a 9-2 win.
Derek Manning was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for E-town.
Elizabethtown (2-5) didn't do itself any favors offensively, stranding six base runners through the first five innings. Penn State Behrend (2-4) scored once in the first to take the early lead at 1-0. The Lions added on three runs in the second. Three more came in the third and by the end of the fourth, PSB was up 8-0.
Riley McGinley reached on an error and was able to advance to second to get himself into scoring position for
Robbie Bertucio. The freshman doubled to score McGinley and get the Blue Jays on the board at 8-1.
Behrend's Mason McGuire a mid-game defensive substitution, smacked a home run in the top of the eighth. Shepherd answered for the Jays in the bottom half of the inning with the first round trip around the bases for the sophomore. He was 2-for-4 in the game and one of four Elizabethtown players who recorded multiple hits. Manning led the way with three, while
Mike Christy, Bertucio, and Shepherd each followed with a pair.
Tyler McGonigle, McGinley,
James Kantner, and
Andrew Fisher recorded the other hits for the Jays.
Matt Barton took the loss in his first career start. He struck out two in four innings and walked none.
Reece Jones came on in relief and pitched the final five innings. Phil Myers got the win for the Lions and moved to 2-0 on the year.
