ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team met Trine for the second time this season Wednesday night at Thompson Gymnasium. This time, however, the Thunder enacted some retribution and got back at the Blue Jays with a 3-0 sweep in non-conference action.
It was a Trine (5-15) lead 4-2 early, but five straight from Elizabethtown (5-14) gave the Blue Jays a 7-4 lead.
Nick Baxter put down one of his team-high 11 kills to start the rally. With
Steven Schreffler serving, E-town grabbed the lead for the first time. Schreffler posted a pair of aces during the stretch while Baxter added another two kills.
The Thunder trailed 11-7, but worked their way back and eventually took the lead over at 13-12.
Ethan Maurer did return the lead to Elizabethtown with two aces of his own, but a 16-15 lead for the Jays evaporated as Trine scored four in a row and didn't give the lead back on their way to a 25-21 first set victory.
The Blue Jays had to battle their way back in the second set. Down 16-11, five consecutive points in favor of E-town made it 16-16.
Kyle Murray and
Tim Zieber blocked a Kyle Dixon attack at the net to give Elizabethtown a 19-17 lead and momentum going into the final stretch of the set. Once again, Trine answered to take a late lead and held off EC to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
A slow start to the third set could have cost the home team and after trailing by as many as six points, Elizabethtown came on late. The Blue Jays tied it at 21-21 on Maurer's kill. Dixon gave the Thunder a 22-21 lead with one of his game-high 14 kills, but the Jays responded. Schreffler knotted it back up and then Zieber's ace put E-town back in front. An attacking error for Trine made it set point for EC as they tried to extend the night's match.
A timeout by the Thunder seemed to work, as they scored three straight and were a point away from the sweep. Another error on the attack cost Trine and tied the score at 25-25. The Thunder would put the match away, though, on a kill by Dixon followed by Eric Santiago-Garcia as the visitors scored the final two points and got out of Thompson Gym with the 3-0 win.
The men's volleyball team will host Wilson (11 a.m.) and Mount Union (3 p.m.) on Saturday, March 9.
