Hood takes both in doubleheader with baseball

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- A day after sweeping a doubleheader with Muskingum, Hood took two from the Elizabethtown College baseball team on Monday. Derek Manning had three hits in each game for the Blue Jays.

Game 1: Hood 12, Elizabethtown 8
Hood (4-0) scored three runs over the first two innings to get out in front of Elizabethtown (2-4). Derek Manning doubled in Tyler McGonigle to get a run back for the Jays in the third.

The Blazers scored in the top of the fourth to go up 4-1, but the Blue Jays answered three in the bottom half of the inning. Andrew Fisher and James Kantner each had RBI hits for E-town. Fisher knocked in Robbie Bertucio before Kantner brought Fisher home with a triple. Kantner then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4.

Hood pulled back ahead in the fifth and didn't relinquish the lead the rest of the way. Mike Christy and Riley McGinley added RBIs in the sixth to get EC within two, but two runs by the Blazers in the seventh provided some breathing room as they held off Elizabethtown, 12-8.

Game 2: Hood 6, Elizabethtown 4
There were four lead changes with three in three innings of game two. Hood led 1-0 after the first inning, but the Blue Jays put themselves in front in the top of the third. Christy doubled and Manning scored on the hit. McGinley drove in Christy as E-town now led 2-1.

The Blazers scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead at 3-2.

For the second straight inning, Elizabethtown scored a pair of run. Anthony Knights drove in Bertucio and Manning doubled in a run to give the Blue Jays the lead back at 4-3.

Hood held EC scoreless in the fifth and grabbed the lead for the fourth and final lead change of the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Manning led off the seventh with another double and put a runner in scoring position and the Jays down two with no outs. After two consecutive outs, McGinley moved Manning up to third on a single, but the Blazers got the final out of the game before Elizabethtown could manufacture another run and remained unbeaten with a 6-4 win.

Manning hit 6-for-9 on the day and leads the team in average (.522). Bertucio finished the day 5-for-6. The two are tied with a team-high four doubles.

Elizabethtown will face Penn State Behrend on Thursday, March 7, at 10 a.m.
