TOWSON, Md. -- It was a game for the record books as the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team tied several program records in Saturday's 22-4 blowout win at Goucher. 13 different players recorded goals and 18 players recorded at least a point for the Blue Jays.
Andrew Watts and
Mike DiGenova led E-town with a hat trick and an assist each.
DiGenova wasted no time in getting Elizabethtown (5-5, 1-1 Landmark) in front with his first of the game 59 seconds after the opening faceoff.
Cody Richter assisted on the goal. 32 seconds later,
Mike Scrafano made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal. Watts and
Ben Hiltebeitel added goals as the Blue Jays were ahead 4-0 before five minutes had gone by in the game.
Rashaan Evans put Goucher (4-6, 0-2 Landmark) on the board with a goal at 4:39 of the first quarter, which made it 6-1. Hiltebeitel added his second of the quarter less than a minute later and EC was up 7-1 after the first quarter.
DiGenova helped Elizabethtown finish the first half on a strong note after Scrafano found the junior attack for his hat trick goal, the final of the half and the Jays led 10-3 at the break.
The Gophers went a man down on three occasions in the third quarter that the Blue Jays would be able to take advantage of with goals.
Thomas Palen was the first of three man up goals in the third as he was set up by
Nick Cost. Cost added his second assist on an EMO, finding Richter for another man up goal, which came after Watts scored with the teams even.
Zach Petiet would get the first goal of his collegiate career to make it 14-3 and less than a minute after, Watts had his hat trick.
The Jays kept on rolling as
Griffin Liebsch and
Jeremy Klipple added their names to the scoresheet with a goal apiece in the final 1:29 of the third. Klipple had grabbed a ground ball and a few seconds later had a man down goal for the Blue Jays.
Brandon Smith scored a man down as well for E-town, the first of his career.
Brandon Sankey had opened the fourth with a tally on a Palen assist prior to Smith's goal.
Micah Ballew registered his first career point with the helper on Smith's goal.
Frankie Cortes didn't just score his first career goal, but got a second with 12 seconds left in regulation. Those came after
Owen Yake set up Palen for his second of the contest with 4:36 to go in the fourth.
Elizabethtown's 22 goals tied a program record set on March 13, 2002 against Misericordia. It is the seventh time in program history the Blue Jays have scored 20 or more goals. The 35 points (22g, 13a) also tied a program record, as did the pair of man down goals. The 13 assists tied for the fourth-most in a single game and E-town's season-high 55 shots tied for the eighth-most in a game.
Tom Mahoney had six saves and only allowed three goals to Goucher in 45:00.
Jack Myers,
Brandon Calle, and
John Talbott all saw action in the game for E-town.
The men's lacrosse team will gear up to play at Franklin & Marshall on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m.
