ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Madelyn Baker,
Lexie Sharp, and
Kate Ziegler combined for 17 goals for the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team in a 20-15 win over Goucher on Saturday at Wolf Field. The win was the first in conference play for the Blue Jays.
Jess Principe and
Jesse Sartor also scored for E-town.
Sharp scored her first of six in the game early on to give Elizabethtown (3-7, 1-1 Landmark) a quick 1-0 lead. The Gophers would go in front on consecutive goals by Alyssa Long 29 seconds apart. There were four more ties in the first half before goals by Ziegler and Sartor gave the Jays a two-goal lead, 7-5.
A five-goal advantage for Elizabethtown shrunk to two by halftime as Goucher (7-4, 0-2 Landmark) got four of the final five goals of the half. Emily Flinn's 19th of the year with 14 seconds left in the half made it 12-10.
The Blue Jays started off the second half strong with the first six goals to grow the lead up to eight, 18-10. While the offense put up goals, the defense stifled Goucher's attack, not allowing a single shot over the first eight and a half minutes of the second half until Jordan Tice's goal made it 18-11.
The Gophers were able to outscore the Jays 5-2 the rest of the way, but the lead was insurmountable as Goucher ran out of time. Julia Gazzola scored with 15 seconds to go in the game, but it only made it a five-goal game as E-town saw it out, 20-15.
Abbie McHerron kept the Gophers in the game with a game-high 18 saves.
Abby Kopytko made seven for the Blue Jays, including several key stops in the second half.
Jennifer Beihoff also got in for Elizabethtown and made two saves in 15:30.
The women's lacrosse team will make up its game with Penn State Abington from early in the season on Thursday, April 4, at 4 p.m.
